Summer Travel Bliss: Move Well, Feel Great

Summer’s here, and the open road or blue skies are calling! As a master Pilates and GYROTONIC® Method trainer at Thrive Movement Studios in Westlake Hills, TX, I love the thrill of travel, but I know it can take a toll on your body. From stiff backs to tight shoulders or sluggish digestion, those travel aches are all too real. Let’s share some simple tricks to keep you feeling vibrant on your journey, plus a way to stay connected to Thrive’s mindful movement wherever you roam.
Ease Your Low Back
Long hours sitting in planes or cars can leave your lower back grumbling—sitting is the new smoking, after all! Most seats lack lumbar support, stressing your spine. My go-to fix? Roll up a light jacket or towel and tuck it behind your lower back to maintain a neutral curve, easing pressure on your discs. Bonus tip: Stand and stretch every chance you get—your back will thank you!
Soothe Your Neck & Shoulders
Heavy carry-ons or dragging overstuffed bags (ugh, those airline fees!) can strain your neck and shoulders. Lugging a bag pulls your upper arm bone out of alignment and tightens your trapezius muscle, sparking tension or headaches. My solution? Use a four-wheel roller bag to push, not pull, and check bags when possible. Pack a tennis ball in a sock for easy trigger-point release—drape it over your shoulder and roll against a wall or seat to melt tightness.
Boost Your Digestion
Travel often means new foods, odd meal times, and less hydration (hello, dry airplane air!). This can slow your digestion, leaving you sluggish. My secret weapon is a quick Mayan Abdominal Massage, done daily on trips. Lie back with knees bent, imagine your belly as a clock (12:00 at your sternum, 6:00 at your pubic bone), and gently stroke from 6:00 to your navel three times. Repeat from 7:00-8:00 and 4:00-5:00, then from 12:00, 10:00-11:00, and 1:00-2:00. Finish with tiny clockwise circles around each clock number and a continuous spiral from large to small circles. This gentle massage keeps things moving!
