The GYROTONIC® method works differently from anything else in a fitness studio. Its circular, spiraling movements don't isolate muscles — they mobilize the entire body, releasing compression in the joints, lengthening the spine, and rebuilding the fluid, three-dimensional movement most of us have gradually lost.
Clients who've spent years with chronic neck tension, tight hips, or limited shoulder mobility often notice a shift within the first few sessions. It's not magic — it's a system that treats the body as what it is: interconnected.
Most exercise disciplines ask the body to produce force. Gyrotonic asks it to open.
Through arching, spiraling, and rhythmic circular patterns — coordinated with breath — the GYROTONIC® method creates space in the body rather than compression. The result is increased range of motion, stronger and more stable joints, and a sense of ease in movement that clients describe as genuinely new.
At Thrive, every Gyrotonic session is led by Cheryl Combs Dunn, a Specialized Master Trainer in Levels 1 and 2 — one of a relatively small number of practitioners certified at that level in Texas.
Gyrotonic is genuinely adaptable. Cheryl works with clients recovering from injury, postpartum clients rebuilding strength and range, high-level athletes looking to balance intense training with restorative work, and clients in their 50s and 60s who want to stay mobile and strong without impact.
If you've never tried it, the best starting point is a private introductory session — it gives you a real experience of the method and lets your trainer calibrate the work to your body from the first session.
Start with an Intro Session →Cheryl has been teaching the GYROTONIC® method since 2002. She is a Specialized Master Trainer in Levels 1 and 2, and a GYROKINESIS® Pre-Trainer — credentials that represent years of advanced coursework, supervised teaching, and hands-on mentorship within the GYROTONIC® system.
She also trains other Gyrotonic teachers. When you work with Cheryl, you're working with the person who teaches instructors how to teach.
A holistic movement system that focuses on stretching and strengthening muscles while simultaneously stimulating connective tissue around the joints. It uses a specialized apparatus — the Gyrotonic tower — to guide circular, three-dimensional movements coordinated with breath.
Pilates emphasizes core stability and linear strength through controlled movement. Gyrotonic emphasizes spinal mobility, joint decompression, and three-dimensional movement through circular and spiraling patterns. They complement each other well — many Thrive clients practice both.
No experience needed. A private introductory session is the best way to start — your trainer will guide you through the fundamentals and tailor the session to where you are.
